AUDITION UPDATE:
TALKING WITH THE DIRECTOR ABOUT A LITTLE MURDER NEVER HURT ANYBODY AUDITIONS

Maurer Productions OnStage (MPO), is taking audition appointments for its production of A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody. All roles are open. All actors are welcome. A Little Murder will audition August 18 from 10am to 5pm and August 19 from 12pm to 5pm on the West Windsor,NJ campus of Mercer County Community College. Actors may click here to book audition appointments online. Ahead of the auditions, the show’s director, Diana Gilman Maurer, sat down to talk about what she is looking for.

Q: What advice do you have for people who aren’t sure if they should audition for A Little Murder?

Diana: If you are within the right age range for the role you are after, then by all means,audition! Auditioning is difficult for actors because there is so much that is beyond their control. It’s not always just about having the best read, it’s more than that. It also has to do with how well you fit the role compared to the next actor, how you fit with the rest of the cast, etc. Things you just can’t control. With so many obstacles between you and a role, you don’t want your own self-doubt, or false assumptions about what the director wants, to be the reason you weren’t considered. Not everyone is right for every role but you won’t know until you try!

Q: What are you looking for in the actors who audition?

Diana: Like most comedies, A Little Murder needs people who have a good sense of timing and physicality. I need to see that you are willing to put a lot of work into having fun. When I first saw the show, I knew I had to bring it to the Kelsey stage because it is such a funny show.

Q: What is the best advice you can give auditioners?

Diana: Be prepared! Look over the monologues that are provided in the audition packet. You don’t need to memorize the monologue, but be familiar with it and let me see what you can do with it. I may ask you to read it in several different ways.

Q: Are any of the roles in your production of Murder pre-cast?

Diana: No, We don't believe in pre-casting. Having all the roles available means you get a wider talent pool trying out for the show. We are proud of the fact that we have helped to introduce some new talent to the Kelsey Theatre. It is a great feeling when you see someone new at auditions and they just blow you away. In our last three productions of Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida, Neil Simon's Laughther on the 23rd Floor and The Drowsy Chaperone, all of which were nominated for NJACT Perry Awards, roughly half the cast was made up of people we’d never worked with before and some of those have never performed at the Kelsey before.

Kelsey Theatre Grabs 27 Perry Nominations

Last month, NJACT (New Jersey Association of Community Theatres) honored the Kelsey Theatre with 27 Perry Award Nominations in 21 categories for seven shows from the 2011-2012 season. Three additional nominations were given to MPO alums in central New Jersey.

Pennington Players production of 13: The Musical recieved three nominations, including: OUTSTANDING YOUTH ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, Meredith Brandt; OUTSTANDING YOUTH ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, Natalia Maccaroni; OUTSTANDING STAGE MANAGER, Beverly Kuo-Hamilton.

MPO's production of The Drowsy Chaperone received noms for OUTSTANDING COSTUME DESIGN FOR A MUSICAL, John M. Maurer, Kathy Slothower, Debbie Sills and for OUTSTANDING FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, Judi Parrish.

Pierrot Productions received a nom for each of its 2012 shows, including: OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A MUSICAL for Jim Petro in Company; OUTSTANDING PROPERTIES FOR A PLAY for Amy Bessellieu in Death of a Salesman; OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL for Vicky Czarnik in Blood Brothers.

MPO Alumnus Faith Dowgin (A Few Good Men) received two nominations for work at other theatres: OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION OF A PLAY for Frost/Nixon at Circle Players and for OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A PLAY for Extremeties with East Brunswick Community Players at Playhouse 22. In addition to his nom for Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida with MPO, Anthony DiDia is also nominated for OUTSTANDING MUSICAL DIRECTION for Man of LaMancha with Shore Repertory Theatre Company.

Kelsey Theatre Announces 2012 - 2013 Season

West Windsor, N.J. – This year Kelsey Theatre celebrates its Ruby Pink 40th Anniversary with a salute to the ladies. Kelsey is tickled pink to bring you a season full of strong, masterful, determined, feisty women (and a few grouchy old men).  From the loving mother spider in Charlotte’s Web to Gypsy’s Mama Rose, from tiny Thumbelina to the adventurous Maria in The Sound of Music, and from a very smart talking dog in Martha Speaks to the forceful Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker each of these women will amaze and inspire. And smack dab in the middle of our season – Reock & Roll’s Music from Big Pink.  So pink it is!  As Elle Woods from Legally Blonde would say – “You can’t have too much pink!”.  And of course, according to Mama Rose from Gypsy “Everything’s Coming Up Roses!”  - pink ones of course.

Continuing its Classic Rock Album performance series, which included Déjà vu (2012) and Quadrophenia (2011), The Reock & Roll Revue will pay tribute to another great classic group of musicians of the late 60’s and early 70s-The Band. A musical and video journey that chronicles the paths crossed by Bob Dylan and members of the group that later became known as The Band as they turned the house known as Big Pink into their very own recording studio.

Maurer Productions OnStage, the talented Perry Award-winning group that brought you last year’s AIDA, Laughter on The 23rd Floor and Drowsy Chaperone are back with a recent Broadway musical that won the Tony Award for Best Musical when it opened.  However we are not yet allowed to reveal the name.  Let’s just say that it has absolutely nothing to do with Jim Henson Company, The Muppets or Sesame Workshop, which have no responsibility for its content. Oh, and this one is rated Shocking Pink - it really is not for kids!

Step into the Kit Kat Klub and come hear the music play as MCCC’s talented Theater and Dance Program and Entertainment Technology Majors present Kander and Ebb’s Tony Award-winner.  Set in 1931 Berlin, the musical captures the essence of a society on the brink of massive change. This upheaval is mirrored in the intertwined lives of the characters — denizens of a seedy nightclub and a nearby boarding house--all overseen by the nightclub's creepy Master of Ceremonies. The show's upbeat music reflects leftover Roaring '20s optimism, while the lyrics reveal an almost Kurt Weill/Berthold Brecht-like sense of cynicism, decadence and moral ambivalence.

White’s loving story of friendship live on stage by Theatreworks/USA. THE TOWN MOUSE & THE COUNTRY MOUSE (KELSEY KIDS SERIES)

A quiet and simple country life or the fast-paced excitement of the city? That’s the question confronting the Country Mouse in Theatre IV’s square-dance-meets-sock-hop retelling of the classic Aesop’s Fable. As the Country Mouse ponders the abundant riches of the big city being offered by a fast-talking Town Mouse, he feels the tug of a different kind of riches he left behind in the country. What will he decide? Watch this rock and roll hoe down and find out!

“The Hills Are Alive with The Sound of Music” -  whenever Maria is around. Mark Violi (The Foreigner, A Few Good Men) has authored a play about the Brooklyn Bridge.  They are currently fundraising to bring this amazing show to New York City.  You may have caught it when it was performed in this area.

Theater to Go announces launch of fundraising effort to bring Roebling:  The Story of the Brooklyn Bridge to NYC in March 2013

The new drama Roebling: The Story of the Brooklyn Bridge is in development for a New York City Equity Showcase Production to be produced by special arrangement between the author Mark Violi and Theater to Go. Plans are underway to present this show in March 2013.  That time was selected because 2013 marks the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, and March is Women’ History Month in recognition of the enormous contribution of Emily Roebling to the completion of this American icon.

Fundraising has begun at www.roeblingplay.com. Through a special arrangement with Fractured Atlas, Theater to Go is able to accept tax deductible contributions and has arranged to offer some incentives donated by the Roebling Museum including artifacts from the Roebling factories. With the success of the fundraising, this showcase production is seen as a first step toward a larger New York production. Theater to Go is well known throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for their unique interactive theater events. At the helm is Ruth Markoe who has produced, directed and performed throughout the region for many years and who brought the NJ premier to the stage.

Based on the true story of the Roebling family who labored against all odds to conceive, design and finally build the New York’s World-Famous Brooklyn Bridge, this play has been endorsed by the Roebling Museum and by descendants of John Roebling. This play has had two widely acclaimed non-equity productions in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey. The New Jersey premier was produced in 2010 by invitation of the Roebling Museum to open the restored Roebling Auditorium and it was because of the overwhelming response to this play that plans were implemented to bring it to NYC where it must be.

Based on a true story, Roebling: The Story of the Brooklyn Bridge brings to the stage the human drama surrounding the herculean construction effort to complete one of the most endearing and enduring engineering icons in the world. The play examines the beginnings of the project to build the Brooklyn Bridge in1869, through its completion in 1883. It is a play about a forward thinking family on the cutting edge of the Industrial Revolution. The play shows how this project foreshadowed the 20th century in its huge ambition, the revolutionary construction techniques developed by John Roebling and implemented by his son Washington, and in the recognition of the invaluable role that a woman, Emily Roebling, played in the completion of this enormous project.

Roebling: The Story of the Brooklyn Bridge is a gripping saga of triumph over adversity. In the writing of this saga, Mr.Violi has made every effort to maintain the historical accuracy of the events, while engaging the audience with the difficulties endured and overcome by the Roebling family.
Roebling author Mark Violi is an accomplished writer, actor and producer. He has optioned two feature film screenplays to production companies in New York and Hollywood. His plays Roebling and Riding the Comet have both had non-Equity productions at Actors’ NET of Bucks County.

Nunsense at Kelsey Theatre

Liz Rzasa (Man of La Mancha) will be performing as Sister in Shore Repertory’s production of Nunsense.
Synopsis:  The show is a fund raiser put on by the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury sisters accidently poisoned by the convent cook, Sister Julia, Child of God.
